Pilates not only involves all the muscle layers (as well as any other movement, the question is only in degree). With the help of Pilates, there is a CONSCIOUS effect on the deep muscles, which performs the function of support in the body for any movement, allowing it to occur with the least energy consumption.
Pilates is an original, unique and so multifaceted Method that yogis see yoga in it, martial artists see fighters in Joe, dancers dance, philosophers teach, physiotherapists use physiotherapy, psychologists use wisdom, etc. P.

Localization of the physical effect of the method on the human body is much more voluminous than the power house and the central axis. The basis of the method is the organization of the whole body, placing it in conditions conducive to the inclusion of the built-in self-healing function. Simply put, the necessary condition for practice is the ordering of the entire body, each of its joints and awareness of the source of motion (power house), which allows the body to move for good. “Make sure you use the whole body.” Joseph Hubertus Pilates. The philosophical basis of the method is not a local impact on the “sick” site, but the organization of the entire structure, which allows changing the functioning conditions of the site subject to excessive load. “Contrologology (Pilates) – the full coordination of the body, mind and spirit.” J.H. And this is incomparably more than just the ability to concentrate attention and control movements. This is an interaction skill that is not submission.

The history of the Method originates in the childhood of its creator. First, he “created” himself (returned to a full life), then he trained others, then he learned to use his system for rehabilitation, working with wounded during the First World War, traveled around the world, taught self-defense. Having moved to America, he opened his Studio. Balanchine and his dancers (and not only Balanchine dancers) were based nearby and very soon felt the full potential of the Joe Method – from rehabilitation to increasing the physical potential of any, most trained body.

Joseph Pilates personally developed innumerable exercises, colossal tools of unique equipment, left a rich archive and legacy in the form of two books (one of which describes the basic sequence of 34 exercises on a mat for home use, as he saw it), many photographs, videos, ideas embodied and not embodied, a galaxy of Masters-Students, which are commonly called Elders today. His students were ballet dancers, athletes, businessmen, doctors, opera divas, movie stars, politicians and housewives. In his studio, social status did not matter!

By the way, about Joe’s book “Return to Life through Control” by Pilates, 1945 edition. More than a year ago, it was translated into Russian and published.
Today the Pilates repertoire is even more extensive, thanks to the creativity of followers. But to distinguish Pilates from non-Pilates allows the principles laid down by the creator of the Method, regardless of the fashion trends of our time.
There are a lot of Schools officially and not officially in the world. The most logical arrangement of the Wheel of Schools will be binding to the Elders. The center or axis is considered to be Joe and Clara Pilates, 9 Elders (not all Schools agree with this amount) – wheel spokes coming out of the center, the ends of the spokes – modern Schools. The method as a whole includes history and modernity, which makes it stronger, thanks to the knowledge of the source.

In the arsenal of the Pilates Method: exercises on the Mate, work with large and small equipment, work at the Wall, on the street, many additional techniques. Joe himself spoke of his equipment as follows: “I invented all these devices in order to teach people how to move better without them.” Therefore, Pilates on a mat with small or large equipment does not make sense to consider it as different issues. Rather, it is a single and indivisible Method. Elder Pilates, now living Lolita San Miguel, who was certified by Joseph himself, says: “A Pilates teacher can call himself that only knowing the WHOLE Method. Knowing the repertoire of working on the mat is not knowledge of the Method. It is knowledge of the exercises on the mat. Equipment is an integral part of the method, compulsory for its comprehension. ” And more, Katie Grant (who died in 2010 at the age of 89), Elder Pilates, said: “You can learn all the exercises with all the equipment and the mat, but this does not mean that you know the Method.”

A feature of Pilates equipment can be considered that Joseph was able to technically express the internal structure of the body. Therefore, knowledge of equipment and the “body structure”, implementation of principles and skills in working with equipment are inseparable from the Method. Equipment affects the body in very different ways – it pushes, gives support, helps and interferes, explains and works with attention. And with each body, all this happens in different ways. There are no identical bodies. Therefore, there is no equal effect of equipment on the body. Therefore, we need a Method Teacher who knows more than just exercises.
